Tour de Lakewood: Residents Stay Active During COVID-19

Joe Kent is an avid cyclist. In 2019, he did 165 rides with an average ride being 38 miles. As Lakewood put precautions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19, Kent and many other residents had to adjust their exercise routine to ensure the safety and health of all Lakewood residents. So, Kent has taken to riding his bike along the loop road on campus.

“I have had five rides with the shortest being 25 miles and three being 40 miles. Today was windy so I stopped at 31 miles,” he said.

The loop road is about a half-mile around, so Kent’s typical forty-mile ride takes 80 loops and 2.5 hours. He said it is a way to get out of the house, get in a good workout and stay healthy.

“All my rides are non-stop, and I don’t engage with others on campus while riding,” he said.

Lakewood Executive Director Barrett Way said it has been a challenge to curtail residents’ ability to exercise the way they may like to. But he is encouraged by Kent and many others who are taking advantage of the campus grounds that can be enjoyed amidst the COVID-19 situation.

“I love seeing him fly by my window in his yellow shirt,” said Way. “I can’t think of a better way to show how our residents are still remaining active than to see Mr. Kent riding by the Clubhouse!”

With all of the sidewalks, paths and, of course, the loop road, there are plenty of ways to remain socially distant—at least six feet apart—and get in a good workout and enjoy the spring sunshine.
