Lakewood Confirms Two Cases of COVID-19 in Team Members

LifeSpire of Virginia—Lakewood Retirement Community’s parent company—confirms that two team members at Lakewood tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19). Lakewood’s management team became aware on April 2 and subsequently reported the test results to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) per the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

One case is a member of the janitorial staff who is primarily responsible for trash collection and cleaning in independent living common areas only. Prior to the test result, the individual was last at Lakewood on March 27. The second is a Bon Secours nurse practitioner (NP) contracted to work one day a week in the clinic. The nurse was last at Lakewood on March 24 and was not exposed to COVID-19 until March 28. Therefore, it is unlikely that the NP exposed any residents or team members to the virus.

At this time, we do not believe the janitorial staff member had any physical contact with residents. We have identified all team members who were in close contact with this individual. These team members have been tested for COVID-19 and will self-quarantine at home pending test results. Both team members were screened every day before entering the campus. Neither team member exhibited any signs or symptoms of the virus during these daily screenings.

We continue to closely monitor all residents in assisted living, memory care and health care to ensure that everyone is in good health. We are following all of the necessary precautions and guidelines set forth by the CDC. Additionally, all team members are following disease transmission-based guidelines as set forth by VDH to limit the possible spread of the virus.
