This former rail bed features a wide, level surface made of finely crushed limestone, making it accessible and enjoyable for all. The trail’s highlight is the iconic High Bridge, 2,400-foot-long bridge towering 125 feet above the Appomattox River. Designated a National Recreation Trail, High Bridge Trail connects people to nature, community, and history. Be sure to bring your own drinking water, as none is available along the trail.

History buffs will find plenty to explore in the Richmond area. From the pivotal battles of the Civil War at Petersburg National Battlefield to the birth of a nation in Colonial Williamsburg, the region offers a rich tapestry of historical sites and experiences at:
- Petersburg National Battlefield
Commemorating the nine-and-a-half-month Siege of Petersburg from June 1864 to April 1865, Petersburg National Battlefield offers a 33-mile driving tour with 13 separate sites and three visitor centers in Dinwiddie, Hopewell, and Prince George Counties. Throughout the year, park staff present a variety of talks, tours, living history demonstrations, and special events to commemorate the park’s rich heritage. The Eastern Front Visitor Center features exhibits and audio-visual programs that introduce the story of the siege and its impact on the Civil War. A full day is required to fully explore the battlefield park.
- The Historic Triangle
Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg form Virginia’s Historic Triangle, a captivating destination where history comes alive. These iconic sites — the first English settlement at Jamestown, the Revolutionary War’s conclusion at Yorktown, and the colonial capital of Williamsburg — offer a unique journey through American history.

- Hollywood Cemetery
Established in 1847, the historic Hollywood Cemetery is a 135-acre fully operational cemetery that overlooks the James River. Its purpose-built airport facility includes more than 50 aircraft from the World War I and World War II eras. The museum is also home to historical structures located on 130 acres. In the summertime, the museum holds weekly flying demonstrations. Ever wondered what it would feel like to sit in the open-air cockpit of a WWII warbird? Visitors can reach new heights with 15- or 30-minute flights in an iconic aircraft.
